Equine Dentistry

A tooth with the disease Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis (EOTRH)

It all started when…

Dr. Libby did her first equine dental in 2013 and was hooked! She completed her initial training at the Equine Dental Vets course in Grafton in 2014, and then has continued to add to her qualifications in 2022, when she obtained her Membership in the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Surgeons in Equine Dentistry. Dr. Libby is the only one in Tasmania that currently holds this qualification! Dr. Liam has done two training courses, with the most recent in 2021 at the Equine Dental Vets Course in Grafton. We are also the ONLY clinic in southern Tasmania with a Port-a-safe Crush, allowing use to perform equine dentistry safety and efficiently.

Why use an equine vet for your horses teeth?

  • Only a vet has the medical, anatomical and physiological knowledge to diagnose and treat dental problems, and to understand the effects that dental problems can have on the overall health of your horse.

  • We are fully insured and registered to provide sedation to your horse, enabling a thorough and safe oral examination

  • You can pick our brains regarding additional concerns,. such as lumps, bumps and lamenesses you have about your horse at the same time

  • We can provide pain relief or local anaesthetic when additional dental work is completed or required

  • It allows us to all develop a relationship - you know us, we know you, and we know the horse!

How often does my horse need their teeth doing?

This generally depends on the individual! Generally the ‘normal’ adult horse would require a thorough oral examination once every 12 months. Younger and older horses may require them as frequently as 6 months and if we are treating a specific disease then some may require a review every 3 months!

Advance Dental Treatments

We are fully equip with portable radiology, allowing us to take dental x-rays. Just like humans, most of the tooth lies below the gum line, so we often need x-rays to get a complete picture of your horses mouth. We have a growing range of equine dental extraction equipment for simple procedures. We also have a great relationship with a number of dental specialists, and vets with dental experience to call upon when your horses condition may require more care than we can provide.

Port-a-safe Stocks

This piece of equipment is impressive! It allows use to fully examine the horses mouth in a safe and effective manor. It has in build scales and we are the ONLY clinic in Southern Tasmania that offers the use of this. Would like to see more about Port-a-Safe Stocks? Check them out here - https://portasafestocks.com
